Oral history interview with Gordan B. Stine, 1996.

Interview begins with discussion of Stine's grandparents, Annie Gorse Pinosky Baron and Joseph Baron, widow and widower who met in Charleston, S.C., and blended their respective families. He mentions his grandmother's roots (Gorse family) in Fall River, Massachusetts, and a family story about Joseph Baron's involvement in late 19th century pogroms in Russia. Stine speaks of the Baron's Orthodox Jewish household and how their beliefs affected his childhood. The discussion shifts to Stine's parents, Helen Pinosky and Abe Stine. Stine describes his father's early years and why he changed his name from Abraham Jacob Steinhauser to the shortened version. Stine speaks of his father's work as a sign maker and window dresser and describes the family's frequent moves due to his father's search for financial security. He relates how moving (late 1930s) affected the family's name (changed from Stein to Stine) and his mother's adherence to strict Orthodox practices. He also mentions his father's cut-rate drugstore in Charleston. Stine next describes his early adult years, including his time at the College of Charleston and entrance into the U.S. Marines (1942). He describes the circumstances surrounding his admittance to dental school and how he met his wife, Barbara Berlinsky. Misc. topics include Stine's views on antisemitism and how it affected him personally, his parents' conversion from Orthodox to Reform Judaism, and Abe Stine's views on owning a business downtown vs. uptown in Charleston. Stine mentions several of the civic and political positions he held, notably his close election as president of the South Carolina Dental Association.
